7/24/10 - Sierra Jackson Scores Second Season Sprintcar Win
By BZ ZELLER
While Matt Hein and Andy Alberding take turns being the fastest men in qualifying,
young Sierra Jackson is growing more comfortable winning feature races.
The 17-year-old Jackson won the annual Art Pollard Memorial Saturday night at the
Douglas County Speedway as part of the Northwest Sprintcar Racing Association/American Speed Association Tour. Jackson, who
recently graduated from Middleton High School, Idaho, was also victorious at the NSRA’s previous tour stop in Post Falls,
Idaho.
“I was waiting for (Vern Scevers) to make a mistake because I knew I had
a faster car,” Jackson said. “I didn’t want to do anything too risky. I had to get through some lapped cars,
but I knew I was pretty safe with just a few laps to go before the finish.”
Scevers, a former local sprinter who now races out of Crescent, led the first 27
laps. Scevers never made a mistake, but his florescent orange, No. 15 overheated and on the same circuit that he yielded the
lead to Jackson, he had to exit the track. Scevers also experienced temperature problems in Post Falls.
“We knew before the race that we were still concerned about overheating.
I looked down at the temperature gauge and it said 240,” Scevers said. “At the same time I looked at the gauge,
Sierra got under me. I had oil all over my foot and the motor was just way too hot. So I just pulled it in.”
Alberding clocked the fastest lap (12.638 seconds) during time trials and nearly eclipsed
his own DCS track record (12.494). Hein, who broke his own track record in Post Falls was a close second (12.837). Unfortunately
for the two local drivers, the feature field was set at a 10-car invert, which equated too great a challenge for them to pass
their way to the front in 40 laps. The two-time defending NSRA champion Hein continued his season-long top five streak with
a third place finish. Alberding, who was the tour champ in 2007, earned a fifth place conclusion.
“It was another great race and our car was good.” Hein, a 2006 Roseburg
High grad, said. “The car wasn’t real good up on the top of the track, but it was great on the bottom.”
Following Jackson to the checkered was Cory Lockwood, Nampa, Idaho, Hein, Rick
Brown, Springfield, and Alberding. Other Douglas County competitors were Ray Douglas (10th) and JR Calvert (12th).
Lockwood,
who led every lap of the NSRA Don Hein Memorial at DCS last August, has finished second to Jackson in as many races.
“(DCS) is probably my favorite track. I just love it here,” Lockwood
said. “We had a good run tonight, but by the time we got up to second, (Jackson) was just so far ahead. All I could
hope for was a yellow. She had a good car and we had a good car.”
Hein won the A Dash ahead of Alberding and Brown respectively. Scevers won the B Dash
with Scevers placing second. Jackson won the first Heat while Randy DuBois, Poulsbo, Wash., and Hein finished second and third.
Todd Coleman, Lynwood, Wash., captured the second Heat with Lockwood and Alberding close behind.
Hein entered the Pollard on pace for a third-consecutive NSRA title with a narrow 4-point
advantage over Jackson. With his better qualifying position, the two drivers actually tied in event points and will transport
their slim difference to Ephrata, Wash., in two weeks for the Rebel Jackson Memorial. Alberding recorded his best performance
of the season Saturday and finished the first half of the tour third in the standings, 23 points behind his Roseburg rival.
“We got a good start tonight, but the car was just too loose Alberding said.
“We didn’t have any bite going into the corners, so once we got strung out there we couldn’t do much. We
needed a caution so maybe the tires would have a chance to cool down.”
Alberding remained positive and optimistic as his team prepares for the tour’s
second half.
“We still have a lot of racing to go. Ephrata is such an equalizing race
track because there is absolutely no grip. It’s old asphalt and lapped traffic will come into play. Usually everybody
slides all over the place because the track’s so slippery. But, usually Ephrata is one of our best races of the year.”

7/21/10 (BZ Zeller) The sprintcars are coming!
For the only time this season, the Northwest Sprintcar Racing
Association/American Speed Association will tour in Roseburg. The lightweight, high-powered racers will be the feature event
as 20 teams are expected to compete Saturday night in the Art Pollard Memorial at the Douglas County Speedway.
Fueled by ethanol and powered by 360-cubic-inch engines
that produce 750 horsepower on 1625-pound cars (including driver), fans can expect to witness sub 13-second laps on the short,
half-mile oval.
The race is in honor of the late Pollard who was killed
during the Indianapolis 500 time trials in 1973. Pollard graduated from Roseburg High School in 1945 and dominated the West
Coast racing circuit in the 50s and 60s. During the 1961 season, he captured 22 of 28 main events. NSRA/ASA usually makes
multiple stops in Roseburg, but the scheduled season opener (Don Hein/Casey Diemert Memorial) was rained out in May and DCS
officials were not able to schedule a makeup date.
Pollard raced the Indy seven times and finished eighth in
1967. Known for being kind, generous and outgoing, he often made speeches at schools and churches and even visited the troops
in Vietnam.
Last summer, the Art Pollard Memorial featured vintage sprints
and Pollard’s only son, Mike, raced in the event for the first time. Mike Pollard, a Roseburg native, died just one
month later from complications of esophageal cancer in Reno, Nevada.
Two of the race favorites will be returning to compete on
their home track for the first time in more than a year. Two-time defending NSRA/ASA champion Matt Hein finds himself again
atop the tour standings in 2010. Also contending for the points crown is 2007 champ Andy Alberding of Winston.
“Hopefully I can win more races and another championship
this year,” Hein, a 2006 Roseburg High grad said. “We’re looking for more consistency. Last season it seemed
like we were either right on or off a bit with the car’s setup. We want to finish in the top five every race this year.”
Although he hasn’t found the winners’ circle
yet, Hein and his No. 98 Independent Motor Rebuilders team have indeed placed in the top five every race. Hein, who broke
his own track record in Post Falls, Idaho two weeks ago, leads teen racing sensation Sierra Jackson by only four points. Jackson
raced to the feature win in Post Falls.
Alberding will enter the Pollard Memorial third in points,
19 behind Hein. The Dar-Dan Racing No. 76 driver set the track record in June at Meridian Speedway. Alberding qualified second
at Post Falls, but has been unable to navigate to the front of the field on the short, quarter-mile tracks. Both Alberding
and Hein hope the short, half-mile oval at DCS will allow them enough asphalt to pass through the inverted grid.
“It’s definitely tough to pass on the shorter
tracks,” Alberding said. “We’re looking forward to racing at home and using our speed on the larger track.”
Ray Douglas, Winchester, Vern Scevers, Crescent City, and
Rick Brown, Springfield will join Hein and Alberding as other local contingents.
Last year’s Hein Memorial winner was Washington teen
Cory Lockwood, who led every lap from green to checkered. Lockwood, along with Jeff Montgomery of Canada, will return with
trophy aspirations. Also expected are Jackson, Justin Mack, Todd Coleman, Randy Dubois, Greg Mittendorf and Matt Mansell.
Alberding, the new NSRA president, has been working to bolster
the 2010 tour, said he’s excited about both racing and about fan support.
“We’ve been working real hard in the off season
to build the local sprint car interest back in Roseburg again,” Alberding said. “I don’t have any anxiety
about the race, but I’m definitely anxious to go racing again. I hope everything on the car works okay and the fans
get a great show too.”
Like Alberding, Hein is also race ready.
“This is the most prepared I’ve been,”
Hein said. “The car’s ready to rock.”
Also on the race card are Vintage Sprints, Modifieds, Super
Stocks, Mini Stocks and Old Timers. Gates open at 4 p.m., qualifying is at 5 p.m. and racing starts at 6:30 p.m.

7/3/10 - It had been a while since Randy
Houston had raced at the Douglas County Speedway in Roseburg, Oregon. “I
love coming here, but it seems that I have a lot of bad luck here”, said Houston.
Well, that luck has changed as Randy Houston takes home the $2,000 cash and the custom made trophy for the Oregon National
Guard Firecracker 125.
Houston set fast time in qualifying for the
17 car field made up of cars from all over Oregon and California. However, that
was short lived as he drew a 12 car invert in front of a great crowd. Houston
threw his head back in disgust and laughed as he saw his draw, but knew he would have plenty of time to get back to the front.
It didn’t take long to see that the drivers
meant business as local contenders like Dale Roth and Kyle Pope got caught up in incidents, ending Roth’s night but
Pope was still able to manage a top 10 finish in a tore up car.
The race was ran in two segments, the first
consisting of 75 laps while the final segment was a 50 lap shootout. Other classes
were run in between the two segments, allowing the drivers to make adjustments and tire changes for the shootout. Houston took the lead before the end of the first 75 laps and was able to hang on to the lead the entire
50 lap shootout, despite being challenged several times by local Riley Watson and Robert Hirschbock.
Watson kept Houston in view and threatened to
take over the lead several times from Houston, but Houston’s #9 had none of it.
Watson finished a great run in second place while Watson’s father, Brad, brought home a fourth place finish.
After blowing a motor in Friday practice, Robert
Hirschbock put on a great show and made his hard work pay off. Hirschbock and
crew had to drive back home to Klamath Falls on Friday night to change motors in time to make it back to Roseburg for the
race on Saturday to go back home with a third place finish.
Youngster Steven Snawder, running on a limited
race budget, had a great night and brought his car home in fifth place.
Street stocks and Taco Bell Hornets were also on the card
for the night with 30 lap main events between the two segments. Rookie and point
leader Daniel Jobe took home the street stock win while veteran Jeff Solburg won the hornet main event.

5/29/1010 - Riley Watson said
he had no intentions of winning the feature race Saturday night at the Douglas County Speedway. In fact, the Late Model driver
said he rode to the track on his motorcycle without his racing gear on a sole purpose to be a crewman for his dad.
However, Watson wound up piloting Brad Watson’s orange No. 1 to victory in the 40-Lap Snapware Glasslock Main Event.
Watson started the race from the seventh position ,assumed the lead on Lap 10 and held off fast-qualifier Kyle Pope to claim
the checkered flag. Pope’s son, Anthony, finished third with Jeff Smith and Dale Roth placing fourth and fifth respectively.
The winning Watson explained that after working extended hours at his job and repairing his green No. 11 from a crash two
weeks ago, he was resigned to being a pitman Saturday. But, the elder Watson had other plans. He brought his racecar along
with Riley’s race suit and helmet to the speedway and handed over the keys to his son.
“This was supposed to be the first year in a long time that Dad (Brad Watson) was going to be back in a racecar,’
Riley Watson said. “We built this car from a bare, rusty chassis laying out in the field. We’ve put a lot of heart
in it.”
Watson said both cars will enter the next scheduled race.
While the Watson father-and-son duo are planning a successful return, it was Kyle and Anthony Pope who made their own Saturday
night. After both Popes failed to finish in their first appearance of the season, they bounced back with impressive finishes.
Kyle Pope started the main in the back of the field and moved into the second spot on Lap 23. He made a valiant
effort for the lead during Lap 33 on the backstretch, but couldn’t complete the pass before the turn.
“I could catch him (Watson), but I couldn’t get around him,” Pope said. “At the end of the race, my
car was loose big time.”
Wade Koens won the A Heat, Steven Snawder won the B Heat and Watson won the Trophy Dash. Kyle Pope’s 15.395 second lap
topped all drivers in qualifying.
Tim Jennings
shed his series of bridesmaid finishes an d captured his first-ever Old Time Racers of Oregon Main win. Jennings held off
OTRO stalwart Mike Batman by a quarter-car margin at the finish line. Trevor Thomason was third.
Batman was the fast qualifier (17.645 seconds) and won the A Heat and Troy Gasner won the B Heat. Jennings won the
Dash.
The largest Main field
of the night was the 21-car Hornet grid. Points leader Jeff Solburg snared the race lead early and cruised to victory with
“Grandpa” Bob Miller and Monte Cox finishing second and third.
Solburg captured
the A Heat with Benjer Herbert and Brian Bach also claiming Heat wins. Cox (19.904) was the fast timer.
Melody Stutzman won the Lady Stinger Main and time trial (21.244). Rebecca Lane edged Jessy Jobe at the finish in the Heat.
Ricky Perry won Junior Stinger Main and Sean Yarbrough won the Heat.
In the Street Stock class, Rob Mueller won the Main, the Dash and time trial (17.261). Points leader Daniel Jobe finished
second and Monte Cox Jr. was third. David Murphy won the A Heat and Ed Fry won the B.
BZ Zeller started from the back of the nine-car field and won the 541radio.com Media/Veterans Appreciation Race. Zeller, a
tenured race writer/announcer and Army veteran, battled Army National Guardsman, SSG Jason Willet before capturing the checkered.
Mike Sullivan of the News-Review was third.

5/15/2010 - David Miller scored his
first main event win of the season and increased his points lead over his fellow Snapware Glasslock Late Model drivers on
Saturday night at the Douglas County Speedway. Miller set the standard for the
night by qualifying fast time over local racer Dale Roth while Eric Gannon of Redding, California took home some hardware
in the trophy dash.
Bobby
Barnes mirrored Miller’s performance by also setting fast time and winning his first main event in the12 car street
stock field. Rookie Daniel Jobe claimed second place and increased his point
lead over Vince Christian who appears to be on track for what could be the best year of his career and sits second in the
points battle thanks to his heat win and a third place finish in the main event.
The
Old Time Racers of Oregon continue an impressive display of racing, as Bill Trotter held off Mike Batman in another main event
photo finish. Trotter also won the fast heat with Mark Minter posting the fastest
time of the evening in qualifying. Batman still took home some hardware by claiming
the trophy dash win.
The
Taco Bell Hornets had another full field, starting 22 cars in the main event, which was claimed by Oakland resident Andy Nelson
Sr. Nelson also set fast time in qualifying while Bob Vancil, Josh Brach, and
Jake Dawson claiming heat wins. Rebecca Lane and son, Bailey Lane, both claim
main event wins in the Lady and Junior Stinger features.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
5/8/2010 - Willie Thompson and Donnie
Moore are off to a great start to the 2010 season at Douglas County Speedway. They
both have won the only two main events for their respective divisions during Saturday night’s Rio Networks Mother’s
Day Race.
Willie Thompson battled from the back of the pack twice to win the Modified division main
event. Due to qualifying with the fastest time, Thompson started the main in
the back of the field. During his bid for the lead, he and race leader Greg Saily
made contact that took out approximately half the field of cars. The contact
ended Saily’s night and 4 others while forcing Thompson to the back once again.
Saily showed his displeasure with Thompson as he swerved at Thompson in passing on his way to the pits. Thompson then began his charge forward to claim his second win out of only two Modified events this year.
Donnie Moore also continued his win streak in the Super Stock class in a spectacular three-wide
photo finish. Moore, Doug Risley, and Dan Fouts came off of the last turn bidding
for the win. Risley and Fouts sandwiched Moore as all three crossed the line
with less than a car length between the three of them. Risley brought home the
second place run with Fouts winding out the top 3.
Dale Roth returned to the BC Auto Parts Mini Stock division for the first time of the
year in winning form. In the main event, Roth battled hard against Jim Smith
and Jason Gotz to take home the hardware. Smith claimed the second place finish
while Gotz returned home to Portland with a top 3. Point leader Dale Yarbrough
battled back from a hard hit in the backstretch wall to finish fourth.
The J-car division had one of its best turn outs in quite some time as it saw the return
of drivers such as “Crazy” Craig Senger, Jim Scarbrough, and Clarence Senger.
Newcomer Schylar Powers took a hard hit in the heat race that ended his night.
John Cornilsen continued his streak, as well, taking home his second main event win, followed by Craig Senger and Jim
Scarbrough.
The Taco Bell Hornets were creating their own buzz with a huge field of cars for the night. Jeff Solburg took home his first main event of the year along with a win in the fast
heat race. In the main event, Solburg held off youngsters Monte Cox Jr and Michael
Beals, who was filling in for his dad, Dave Beals, while he gave his try at driving a BC Auto Parts Mini Stock.
Racing resumes this weekend, May 15th, for Boy Scout night at the races. All scouts in uniform receive free admission to the races. On the schedule is the Snapware Glasslock Late Models, Street Stocks, Old Time Racers of Oregon, and the
Taco Bell Hornets. Taking the track for the first time of the year will also
be the Junior and Lady Stingers. Gates open at 4, qualifying at 5, and racing
begins at 6:30
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
April 24, 2010 - Riley Watson returned to the Douglas County Speedway in winning
form on Saturday night in the Snapware Glasslock Late Model Division at the Douglas County Speedway. Riley suffered
a mechanical failure and Brad Watson, Riley’s father, gave up his ride to Riley so the former J-car driver could show
the crowd that he hasn’t lost a step at the 4/10-mile track. Due to the driver change, Riley was forced to start
in last place in the fourteen-car field. The race had its share of excitement as rookie Jim Brock’s transmission
exploded in to a ball of fire while on the backstretch that brought out a short red flag condition. Brock was uninjured
from the incident.
2009 Late Model champion Dale Roth and young Anthony
Pope shared some words after the feature due to contact between the two during a caution. Under caution,
while getting in their proper positions, the two collided on the front stretch. Pope felt it was unnecessary and drove
in to the back of Roth’s car, nearly picking the rear end off the ground. “I won’t be intimidated”,
said young Anthony at the end of the night. “If he wants to do me like that, I can do him like that.”
Ben Herbert Jr showed he can run with the best of them at a young age as he held off the veteran Dale Roth
in the Race of Champions. The Race of Champions places all of the 2009 division champions in evenly matched cars to
crown an overall “Champion of Champions”. Herbert received the title as the two drew two very fast cars
with the luck of the draw and began to put space between them and the rest off the field in no time. The veteran Roth
was attempting to school the young driver, but Herbert proved to be experienced beyond his 17 years.
Daniel Jobe wins his very first main event in his first race in the street stock division. Daniel started
out in the hornet division and moved up to the mini stocks last year. He qualified third fastest which set him up for
the historic win. Daniel was very excited about what looks to be a very promising season for the rookie driver.
Former mini stock champion Rob Mueller, Gary Perry, and others suffered mechanical issues, leaving a small but exciting
field for the main event.
Mike Batman and Tim Jennings provided the crowd with a spectacular photo finish in the Old Time Racers of
Oregon main event as the two collided coming across the finish line and put Batman in to the wall. The two were battling
for the win as they attempted to elude a slower car, which allowed Batman to squeak out the win in a finish that was so close
that the crowd wasn’t sure who won until it was announced over the PA system.
David Beals continues his collection of hardware as he takes home another Taco Bell Hornet main event trophy
home. Driver Jeff Solburg and Beals had a long battle as the two friends were bouncing off each other for the lead.
Early in the race, Solburg’s car received some damage and caused the rear bumper cover to come off, but remained attached
to the car. Under a couple of the caution laps, Beals attempted to remove Solburg’s cover completely by driving
over it in an attempt to help his friend out. Eventually, Beals decided he was done playing with his friend and took
over the lead and the trophy.
